Campaign tracking (hosted service)

It is possible to track and document the results of your signature campaigns by using our hosted web service integrated directly into the Cockpit.

To get started with this, you need to obtain a valid on-line ID from eMailSignature. This can only be obtained by contacting eMailSignature directly .

Campaign tracking can be used for all campaigns administered from within the Cockpit.

The following terms are used in the context of campaign tracking:

  • Landing page: The page reader enters when he clicks a link in the campaign message.
  • Measuring a click: Determining that someone has clicked on the campaign and opened the landing page.
  • Click rate: The number times readers have clicked on the campaign.
  • Converting a reader: Often the landing page is not identical to the end page that you want the reader to go to. E.g., You want readers to sign up for a newsletter or to download a product. In that case, you want to measure how many readers are 'converted', i.e. actually sign up (download) and not just enter the landing page and then leave.
  • End page: The page reader must navigate to in order to complete the desired process (e.g. sign up for a newsletter, download a product, etc.).
  • Conversion rate: How many readers have proceeded to the landing page, then completed the actions promoted by the campaign and arrived at the end page. In general, the click rate is much higher than the conversion rate and that is normal.
  • Tracking link: A web address on eMailSignatures hosted web server that is substituted instead of the landing page address in a campaign message in order to track the click rate.

Entering on-line ID

To enter the on-line ID provided by eMailSignature, proceed as follows:

  1. In the Campaign and Reporting toolbar, click 'Settings' button.

  2. In the Global Campaign Settings window that opens, go to the Campaign Tracking section and type the provided ID in the On-line ID field.

  3. Click 'Save' to keep this setting and exit this window. Tracking functionality for your campaigns is now enabled. Additional fields will now appear in campaign design form.

Setting up a campaign for tracking

In this example a campaign called 'Special offer' will be configured to be tracked. The goal of this campaign is for email readers to click on the campaign message and enter the website www.emailsignature.eu to read more about the campaign. On the way, it will be measured whether someone has clicked the campaign.

To configure tracking of a campaign, proceed as follows:

  1. Go to the Modules tab of the Cockpit, click 'Design' and select the campaign you want to track (e.g. 'Special offer'). The campaign is opened in design view. If on-line ID is entered, as described earlier, then additional tracking functionality appears in campaign design view.

  2. To enable tracking for this campaign, click 'Track this Campaign' button. You only need to click this button initially once, in order to transfer the campaign to the hosted server for tracking.

The Cockpit will communicate with the server, and will confirm that tracking is enabled successfully.

Your campaign is now ready to be tracked.

  3. If you have not done so previously, you need to create a link to be used in the campaign. To do so, in the campaign message editor select the text that will function as a link and click the insert hyperlink button Image. Then enter the landing page address into the dialog and click 'OK'.

  4. Now you need to create a unique tracking link to be used in the campaign. A tracking link is a web address on eMailSignatures hosted web server that is substituted instead of the landing page link in a campaign message in order to track the click rate. To create this tracking link, write the landing page address (e.g. http://www.emailsignature.eu) in the Landing Page URL field.

Note: For the tracking link to work properly, the following is required:

    - There is a hyperlink in the campaign message text.

    - http:// is included in front of the landing page URL.

    - The length of the landing page URL is no more than 52 characters.
  5. Select the 'Track all clicks in this campaign' check box. When you select this check box, the landing page link in the HTML code of the campaign message is automatically substituted by a tracking link.
  6. Click 'Save' in the toolbar to keep these changes. The next time users run sign.exe, campaign messages with the new links will be appended to emails. Each time a reader clicks on the campaign link and goes to the landing page, this event will be tracked.

Testing tracking

Once you have created the campaign with the campaign link, you can test that the reader activities are registered properly.

To test whether campaign clicks are registered, proceed as follows:

  1. In the Campaign and Reporting toolbar, click 'Reporting'. This forces the Cockpit to communicate with the tracking server, which might take up to a minute the first time this is done.

    Image

  2. If you have entered the correct on-line tracking ID, a list of campaigns will appear in the Cockpit.

    Image

  3. Check that 'Campaign being tracked?' column shows YES for your campaign (e.g. Special offer). Then verify that a click rate of 0 (zero) is registered in the 'Number of Clicks' column.
  4. Now, to test the campaign, click 'Design' and select your campaign (e.g. 'Special offer'). The campaign is opened in design view.

    Image

  5. To verify that tracking works and to see what the landing page looks like, click 'Preview Campaign'.

    Image

The full tracking link and a preview of the landing page are displayed for your information.

Note: If the preview is not showing the desired page, click 'Close' and check that the landing page URL is typed correctly and that you have included http:// in front of it.
  6. Now that it is confirmed that clicking the link will open the landing page, you can verify that a click has been registered. Navigate to 'Reporting' again.

If you see that someone has clicked the campaign today and the total click number has increased, then the tracking for your campaign is working properly.
